The Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau reports that10.35 million visitors spent time in the city in the year 2006.

The Fort Lauderdale Police Department Crime Analysis Unit reports that 12,769 people were arrested in the year 2012 reflecting a significant drop from the 15,075 people arrested in the year 2011. The number of arrests made for forcible sex offenses decreased as well. In the year 2011, 89 people were arrested for forcible sex offenses and 42 people were arrested on similar charges in the year 2012. Issues Relating to Sex Offenders in Fort Lauderdale

Recently, probation officers and other law enforcement discovered large groups of sex offenders clustering in locations such as motels in Fort Lauderdale because of the city’s stringent requirements when it comes to where individuals convicted of sex crimes can reside. Fort Lauderdale and other cities enacted severe sex offender residency laws after 9-year-old Jessica Lunford was raped and murdered in 2005 by a sex offender who lived in her Central Florida neighborhood. State law requires that these offenders do not live within 1,000 feet of schools, parks, playgrounds, daycare centers and public school bus stops. In Fort Lauderdale, that radius has been extended to 1,400 feet. Fort Lauderdale’s ordinance leaves only 10 percent of the city open for sex offenders, offering few rentals. This is a serious issue currently facing the city of Fort Lauderdale.

Have You Been Arrested on Suspicion of a Sex Crime?

If you have been arrested on suspicion of a sex offense in Fort Lauderdale, it is important that you remain cooperative with the authorities, while exercising your right to remain silent. Everything you say and do can and will be used against you. Police officers will try to coax you into admitting to acts you may not even have committed. Interrogations can be stressful and what you say during these sessions can have a critical impact on your case.

Instead of giving the authorities what they want, please contact a criminal defense lawyer who will advise and guide you during this time. Once your lawyer arrives, it is crucial to your case that you share with him or her everything you know about why you were arrested. Being open and honest with your lawyer will rule out any potential surprises during the proceedings.
