A conviction as a sex offender or sexual predator has serious consequences beyond losing your freedom. You will spend time locked up, but after release you are also going to be required to provide personal information and a headshot photograph that will be added to the national sex offender registry. If your offense is a felony and most sex crimes are felony crimes that are put onto your permanent criminal record that will cause problems for the rest of your life.
Sex offender registration is a government mandated program that originated after several heinous sex crimes involving murdered children. Not much was done prior to 1994 to track sexual offenders, but some laws were passed following tragic child sexual offenses that resulted in death. The first law was the Jacob Wetterling Crimes Against Children and Sexually Violent Offender Act, passed in 1994. In later years, the act was enhanced by the addition of Megan’s Law.
National Sex Offender Registry
The national sex offender registry program began when Congress created the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. This Act was signed into law July 27, 2006 and mandates sex offender registration requirements in every state. Adam Walsh was the kidnapped and murdered 10-year old son of John Walsh, later known for his role on the television program America’s Most Wanted.
A suspect convicted of a sex crime under state or federal law can expect to have their crime follow them around for a lifetime. Here is their future:
- They will have a driver’s license that is marked to show they are a sex offender.
- Jobs will be denied because they have a history of sex offenses and/or a felony.
- Their personal information will be displayed nationwide and reports are required to include their name, address, photo, vehicle numbers, and other information about their whereabouts and living quarters.
Lifetime Impact of a Sex Crime Conviction
Even when your prison time is over, you will be affected by a sex crime conviction. Finding a job or an apartment will be made difficult and employment opportunities will be curtailed. Your personal freedom will be restricted with regard to where you are allowed to be and travel. Sex offender registration was created to protect the public. Registration information must be current at all times and is required for convicted offenders, for life.
